The Very Rich Hours (formerly Moment & Horizon) is currently under construction (i.e., being taken apart and put back together).

This continues to be a home for my series of sunset paintings. I’m now in the seventh year of painting every sunset – having begun the current series on January 1, 2006 – and painted many others, beginning in 1995.

Most of the sunsets are seen from the same vantage point, facing the Blue Ridge, in Virginia, north of Charlottesville. Otherwise I paint the sunset view from wherever I happen to be. Even if painted later from a sketch, these paintings are done alla prima (wet in wet without later revision or overpainting) in around the same time it takes to watch the sun go down.

Please also visit Tabula Rosa (the red series), my Daily Paintworks gallery, and The Very Rich Hours on Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you for your interest in this work.

At the End of May

The woods are deepening into their manifold greens — mature summer green and bright new partytime green, raw cut-over green and distant atmospheric Watteau green, blue cedar berry green, black soil green and indigo bunting twilight silhouette. Each tree’s canopy entails a volume of colorless pure colorspace, trees growing red green, orange green, and breathing out of green blue sky.
